Manja thread injures 3-yr-old at Choolaimedu, trio held

Choolaimedu police arrested three men for making manja thread and kites for sale after a three-year-old boy’s throat was slit by manja thread on Sunday evening.

M Monith of Choolaimedu was playing on the terrace of his apartment when a manja thread attached to a kite dangling in the air cut his neck in front of his parents. They rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was administered first-aid. The parents then lodged a complaint with Choolaimedu police station. Inspector Anand Babu swung into action and secured a suspect. Based on his inputs, two others were secured.

Police said the trio — K Seenivasan (50) of Ayanavaram, B Prabakaran (29) of Kodambakkam, R Aravindhan (34) of Poonamallee — is running a music band and was making kites and manja as a side business. As many as 240 kites, 8,000 metres of manja thread, more than 100 spools, manja mixer and the equipment to smear the mix on the thread were seized from the trio. All three were remanded in judicial custody and a hunt has been launched for the absconding two.
