CHENNAI: The differently abled man, who set himself on fire outside the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) office in RA Puram on Thursday, has succumbed to his injuries on early Friday morning.

The victim, identified as Albert Anthony Samy, 30, a native of Virudhunagar residing in Velachery, was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital after police personnel on duty extinguished the flames. He later died while undergoing treatment.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Samy was a petitioner before the SHRC. The incident followed a case registered against him by the Virudhunagar cyber crime wing in September last year, based on a woman's complaint regarding a financial dispute.

The Abhiramapuram police have registered a case in connection with the self-immolation and are investigating.
