CHENNAI: A 48-year-old man allegedly smothered his second wife to death using a pillow after a tiff over not having a child at Washermenpet on Thursday night. He later staged a drama claiming she was electrocuted. The deceased, Hasina Begam, 37, married the accused Shajahan, of Nainiyappan Garden, 15 years ago.

The couple had no children and they usually fought over the same blaming each other. On Thursday night, Shahjahan called up his mother-in-law Sabira Begam, saying her daughter was electrocuted and was lying unconscious. Sabira Begam, who rushed home, informed the Washermenpet police that she suspected foul play.

Police who reached the house sent the body for post-mortem to Stanley GH. After the report confirmed it was a murder, police questioned Shahjahan, who confessed to crime. He has been arrested for murder and remanded in judicial custody.
