Man killed during building demolition in MRC Nagar

Police said that Muthkrishnan was engaged by a contractor, who had taken up a project of demolishing an old building in Karpagam Avenue in MRC Nagar near Santhome, owned by a jeweller.

CHENNAI: A 39-year-old man, a construction worker was killed after a concrete block fell on him while he was engaged in the demolition of an old building in MRC Nagar in Chennai on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Muthukrishnan (39), from Vellore. Police said that Muthkrishnan was engaged by a contractor, who had taken up a project of demolishing an old building in Karpagam Avenue in MRC Nagar near Santhome, owned by a jeweller.

As many as dozen workers were engaged in the building demolition when the incident happened around 1 pm. Along with Muthukrishnan, another worker, Kumar, got caught under the construction debris.

Witnessing the accident which happened in a matter of seconds, other workers tried clearing the rubble. Personnel from Tamil Nadu fire and rescue services rushed to the scene on information and secured the two men. They were moved to the Government Royapettah hospital, where Muthukrishnan was declared brought dead. Kumar is under treatment, police said.

Foreshore estate police have registered a case and are investigating.
