Chennai: Man held for hurling country bomb at estranged wife’s house

No persons were hurt in the incident and the accused have been secured, city police said.

CHENNAI: A 23-year-old man and his friend hurled a country bomb at his estranged wife's house in Maduravoyal early Thursday morning, creating a flutter in the neighbourhood. The police arrested two people in connection with the incident.

According to the police, residents on Bharathiyar Street in Maduravoyal woke up to the explosives and alerted the police. Investigations revealed that the country bomb was hurled to threaten a young woman who moved in with her parents, who live on the street, after she got estranged from her husband.

The 23-year-old woman got married to Sakthivel of Gummidipoondi three years ago after a brief relationship. However, after the relationship strained, the woman moved in with her parents ten months ago. Sakthivel used to visit his in-laws and create commotion.

In May 2025, he inflicted cut injuries on his wife after trespassing into her house, after which Maduravoyal police arrested him.

On his release from prison, Sakthivel continued harassing his wife and early Thursday morning, he hurled a country bomb at the house and fled.

Based on the information, the Maduravoyal police secured Sakthivel and his friend, Satish (23). They were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Investigations revealed that Sakthivel procured the explosives in Gummidipoondi.
