CHENNAI: A major security breach occurred at Chennai International Airport on Monday morning when a 26-year-old man managed to evade multiple security layers and enter a restricted passenger transit area.

The incident has raised serious concerns as it happened during a period of heightened seven-tier security arrangements in place for Republic Day.

The intruder, identified as Joshua from Arumbakkam, was apprehended by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel near Gate 103 in Terminal 1 arrival hall around 7 am. He was found loitering without a ticket, boarding pass, or any authorised entry permit.

During interrogation, the man made bizarre claims, stating he had entered the airport to "see and buy" it. Authorities suspect he may have mental health issues. He was subsequently handed over to the airport police for further investigation.

The breach is particularly alarming as the airport has been under enhanced surveillance since January 17, with the strictest 7-layer protocol active from January 24-26. CCTV footage suggests he entered through Gate 3 around 6 am and moved unchecked for nearly an hour.

Senior officials have launched a thorough probe to determine how he bypassed multiple checkpoints where CISF personnel meticulously screen all entrants.

The incident has exposed potential vulnerabilities in the airport's security perimeter, prompting an internal review of protocols and personnel deployment.
