Madhavaram residents celebrate Kaanum Pongal with kolam art and pot-breaking events

CHENNAI: The annual kolam and uriyadi (pot breaking) competitions were organised by Palaniappa Nagar Civic Association in Madhavaram on Saturday (Kaanum Pongal).

Residents participated with enthusiasm braving the early morning mist and chill weather. The entire street witnessed a grand festive atmosphere and carpet of colourful kolams.

Winners were judged for their creativity in kolam, and physical strength in uriyadi. Organisers announced that all winners will be honoured during the Republic Day celebration on January 26.

Two surprise visitors from Germany looked thrilled to be part of the celebration, and even relished the taste of sweet Pongal prepared for the occasion.
