Chennai
The project is being carried out alongside the Greater Chennai Corporation, and will be the first among 14 planned Public Art Districts for the city.
According to Ritesh Sharma, project manager with the NGO ‘St+art India’, which is working with the GCC to make the murals, a Public Art District is an area which features painting and murals from various artists that reflects the sentiments of the community. Four artists from India and abroad will be working on the mural to achieve this over the next few weeks.
“Many people in the slum areas do not have access to this kind of art usually. This will bring the art to them. This is a continuous process and will continue even after the paintings are done. It is my hope that local artists from Kannagi Nagar take over the walls,” said Sharma.
These art districts will also draw in more tourists, he said. The murals will also help raise awareness on certain issues like hygiene and waste segregation.
