CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday reviewed the progress of the Kalaignar International Convention Centre (KICC), coming up on the East Coast Road at Muttukadu, while en route to lay the foundation stone for the Mamallan reservoir to supply drinking water to the State capital, declaring that the facility will be open by November 2026.
The dedicated public-sector mega-venue for global events, Kalaignar Convention Centre, is expected to dwarf the World Trade Centre, a private-sector commercial and trade hub.
In a statement, he said the project was progressing as scheduled and would be ready for inauguration within the stipulated timeline.
CM Stalin laid the foundation stone for the Kalaignar International Convention Centre on May 29, 2025. The world-class facility is being built at an estimated cost of Rs.525 crore on 37.99 acres of land along the East Coast Road at Muttukadu, near Chennai.
The convention centre is being constructed over a total built-up area of 5,12,800 sq ft. The facility will feature a 91,024 sq ft exhibition hall capable of accommodating 10,000 people, a 50,633 sq ft convention hall with a seating capacity of 5,000, and an auditorium with 1,500 seats, apart from several supporting facilities.
The state-of-the-art complex will be fully air-conditioned and equipped with power generators, elevators, and modern safety systems. It will also provide parking facilities for 1,638 cars and 1,700 two-wheelers, along with other amenities required to host national and international events.
