Justice Duraiswamy takes oath as acting CJ of Madras High Court

Recently, while heading the second bench along with Justice Sunder Mohan, Justice Duraiswamy set aside an order of a single judge that was passed in favor of O Panneerselvam in the AIADMK power tussle case.

CHENNAI: After Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari attained the superannuation on September 12, Justice M Duraiswamy of the Madras High Court on Tuesday took charge as the Acting Chief Justice of the chartered High Court.

After Justice Duraiswamy took charge of the position for the second time law officers, including Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohammed Jinnah and other senior advocates, greeted the new ACJ at his chamber. It is noted that Justice Duraiswamy will be attaining the superannuation on September 22.

Justice Duraiswamy is the senior-most judge after Bhandari was recently appointed by the Union Law Ministry to the position of Acting CJ for the second time. When former Chief Justice of Madras HC Sanjib Banerjee was transferred to the Meghalaya HC, the Union government appointed Duraiswamy as the ACJ for a stint till Justice Bhandari was appointed as the new ACJ of the HC on November 22, 2021. Justice Duraiswamy was appointed as an additional judge to the Madras High Court in 2009 and was elevated as a permanent judge in March 2011.
