Speaking to DTNext on Saturday, Prof. R. Gnanamoorthy, founder director of the institute and the centre said that the union government had sanctioned Design Innovation Centres for few institutes in the country, of which IIITDM was the one of them.

“You come up with an idea, we’ll help you in materialising it. This centre will facilitate innovation in India, mostly from the product design aspect. It will help students from our institute, nearby institutes and interested members of the general public also. They can register with us and utilise both hard and soft tools at the centre,” he said.

Prof. Gnanamoorthy added that innovators could try to fabricate products and prove their concepts, thereby becoming entrepreneurs. “We are trying to have verticals like application and soft tools development, in which they will have software, computers and workstations, which would help them develop these apps/ tools. We will also have fabrication tools, which are not easily available in other institutions like 3D printers and scanners for reverse engineering and product development,” he added.

The innovators can also seek assistance and guidance from the institute’s faculty.

The IIITDM Director also explained that they would be launching a Technology Business Incubation (TBI) centre named “Manufacturing, Design, IT (MaDeIT Innovation Centre)” shortly with the support of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and Department of Science and Technology (DST).
