MADURAI: Savukku Shankar, a YouTuber-cum-blogger on current affairs, while appearing before the Madurai bench of Madras High Court on Thursday in the suo motu contempt case, sought evidence of video record for the charges against him.

Previously, the court issued show cause notice to Shankar alias Savukku Shankar, who in an interview to a YouTube channel, Red Pix, on July 22, 2022, made a statement that “the entire higher judiciary is riddled with corruption.”

Therefore, the bench issued notice to Shankar to explain as to why proceedings for criminal contempt should not be initiated against him. He was summoned by the court for his explanation. Shankar sought time to file a petition to counter the contempt proceedings and also demanded the evidence for contempt.

A division bench of Justice GR Swaminathan and Justice B Pugalendhi, after hearing his side questioned him on whether he made a statement that ‘the entire higher judiciary is riddled with corruption.’ The bench then asked whether Shankar wanted help from the legal services authority to argue the case. Shankar wished to designate senior advocate NR Elango. The bench then directed to file a counter affidavit to the case, which was adjourned to Sept 8.
