Heavy traffic congestion on Tambaram-GST Road as people return after weekend

Following Independence Day on Thursday, people enjoyed an extended 4-day weekend.

CHENNAI: Traffic was affected on the GST Road on Monday morning as people returned to the City after the holidays.

The Traffic was choked in Tambaram, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Perungalathur, Vandalur, Urapakkam, Guduvanchery and Singaperumal Koil completely and the vehicles were moving at a snail's pace. The commuters claimed that as usual there were not enough traffic policemen on duty which created chaos at all the important junctions.

Following the long weekend thousands of people left the city to their native places and started to return on Sunday night. Following that the National Highway was choked with traffic from night till Monday afternoon.

All the important junctions were heavily affected as lakhs of people were approaching the City in the same time. Though the Perungalathur flyover was inaugurated the traffic could not be controlled fully and the commuters want the Highways to complete the Irumbuliyur flyover extension work soon so that it would give some relief.

Dinesh, a commuter from Tambaram said it took him two hours to reach the Tambaram bus stop from Singaperumal Koil on Monday morning. The commuters demanded better traffic planning.
