HC slams NHAI over poor road condition

Coming down heavily on the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for its poor maintenance of the Maduravoyal-Ranipet section of NH48, the Madras High Court on Monday extended till January 18 an interim order directing NHAI to collect only 50% of toll fees on two toll plazas between Maduravoyal-Ranipet section of NH48.

Wondering whether Lonavala Expressway and Agra are the only National Highways in the country, a division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice R Hemalatha expressed severe dissatisfaction over repair works undertaken to close potholes and craters in the stretch.

“I went to Vellore on Saturday and returned on Sunday night. Only namesake patchwork has been done on the National Highway and it was full of potholes. We are not going to allow NHAI to collect more than 50% toll till Pongal,” Justice Sathyanarayanan leading the bench said.

The bench also raised serious questions about the impression created among foreign delegates about the pathetic conditions of our roads, especially with a lot of MNCs having established factories abutting the poorly maintained National Highway leading to Sriperumbudur.
