CHENNAI: The customs officials at the city airport seized about 1 kg of gold priced at Rs 95 lakh from a passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

While checking passengers arriving from Kuala Lumpur, the officers intercepted a man on suspicion and questioned him. The passenger, who was from Chennai and visited Kuala Lumpur on a tourist visa, appeared nervous and gave evasive replies to the airport personnel.

On further examination of his baggage, the officers found he had a hidden package wrapped in black paper. Upon opening the package, they found it had gold bars weighing around 1 kg, worth Rs 95 lakh.

The officers seized the gold and arrested the passenger. Further investigation is under way to nab the person behind the smuggling.
