CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has warned of strict action, including sealing of property, against owners who fail to pay the tax.

According to a report from Maalai Malar, the civic body said that penalty will be imposed and strict action will be taken on non-payment of property tax and professional tax within this month. Officials added that properties of owners who fail to explain the follow-up notice would be sealed.

With revised property tax rates put in place, the Greater Chennai Corporation is expected to generate annual revenue of Rs 1,200 crore from the 12 lakh property owners within its limit.

As the first half of the year is completed, a revenue of Rs 700 crore is to be collected. However, officials claim that only Rs 490 crore has been collected so far.

Apart from the new property tax implementation, notices have also been sent to the owners to pay the outstanding property tax.
