Ganja, other drugs worth ₹1.5 cr destroyed by Chennai police

Police said that they had received consent to destroy 812 kg of ganja and 15 kg of ketamine seized in 30 cases.

CHENNAI: City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal on Saturday oversaw the incineration of about 846 kg of ganja and other drugs- opioids, worth Rs 1.5 crore seized by the city police, at a facility in Chengalpattu.

Police said that they had received consent to destroy 812 kg of ganja and 15 kg of ketamine seized in 30 cases.

Apart from this, 19.3 kg of ganja kept as evidence in connection with cases in special courts were also destroyed as appeal periods have ended, police said.

Earlier this year, the city police had destroyed Rs 2 crore worth narcotic substances.

They would be taking efforts for demand reduction and will be creating awareness programmes at public places and in educational institutions, the Commissioner said.

Jiwal said that police have drafted a list of peddlers and steps are being taken to freeze their bank accounts. “We will hit them hard,” he added.
