Gamblers fracture cop’s hand near Ponneri, 3 held

A group of men attacked a policeman and fractured his hand when he questioned them for indulging in gambling with cards in the open in Sholavaram near Ponneri.

Based on a tip-off on the illicit sale of liquor in the locality, Sholavaram police constable Neelamegam and a home guard visited a playground in Arumandhai village and found a group of men playing cards with money. When the constable asked them to disperse, an argument erupted and the men allegedly pushed Neelamegam down in which he suffered a fracture in his leg. On information, Sholavaram police launched a hunt for the culprits and investigation revealed that local panchayat board president Vikraman was also involved in the incident. He was arrested along with his two friends Tamilarasan and Ilavarasan. They were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday, and a hunt has been launched for seven others.

Meanwhile, Ambattur police arrested seven persons for indulging in gambling and seized Rs 19,550 from them.
