Initial probe revealed discrepancies in his claims, say cops; autopsy report awaited for further investigation

CHENNAI: A 14-year-old boy, who was admitted to the hospital with injuries after being allegedly sexually assaulted by two unidentified suspects at MGR Chennai Central Railway Station in November last year, succumbed at the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital on Sunday.

The police are waiting for post-mortem examination results to ascertain the cause of death.

The boy was a native of Madhya Pradesh. According to the case registered by the Government Railway Police (GRP), Chennai Central, the child told the investigators through translators and in the presence of child helpline staff that he came to a tea shop when two men took him to an empty train compartment and sexually assaulted him.

According to the boy's statement, he was subjected to oral and penetrative sexual assault. The police said he suffered injuries and was admitted to the government hospital with the help of District Child Protection Unit, Chennai North. A police complaint was registered on November 27, 2025.

However, officials said the initial probe revealed that the boy's version of the events were unfounded and added that his versions were inconsistent during subsequent questioning. When they traced his family members and questioned, they said he had a history of health problems from an accident he sustained three years ago.

"We reached out to his parents asking them to take him back, but they refused saying he has a history of running away from home," a police official said. Police admitted him to a government orphanage, but he escaped from there and was secured again and lodged in a different home.

Last week, he was brought to the hospital again after developing severe complications and he died on Sunday night without responding to treatment.

Police have informed their family members, who are now in Maharashtra, and are awaiting post-mortem examination results to proceed with the investigations.
