The hillock is situated near the railway station and opposite the Chennai airport. The RPF, CRPF and police usually practice shooting in its valley in the mornings. There is a designated shooting range on the hillock.

Around 11 am on Friday, am residents noticed the fire spreading in the hillock. On information, the Meenambakkam police and a team from the Tambaram fire and rescue service arrived at the spot. It took an hour of firefighting for the teams to douse the flames.

The police said that the fire was not triggered because of the heat. “It is too early for a summer fire,” the police added.

The police suspect that someone might have smoked cigarette in that area and threw the bud on dry leaves. They haven’t ruled out the possibility of someone deliberately starting the fire to encroach the area once the vegetation is destroyed. The Meenambakkam police have registered a case and further inquiry is on.
