The accused, P Devarajan (59) of Salem, was an auditor of Tangedco. He had met the victim, Shanmugam of Poonamallee, when the latter was working as a junior engineer in Vellore zone of Tangedco in 2014. When Shanmugam told him Devarajan that his son has completed engineering degree but did not get a job, the latter offered to get him a job in Tangedco. He then collected money in several tranches between 2015 to 2019, totally amounting to Rs 22.5 lakh. However, when he did not fulfil his promise, Shanmugam lodged a complaint at Chintadaripet police station as most of the transactions took place in that jurisdiction. Inspector Murugesan registered a case and asked Devarajan to reimburse the sum within three months. However, Devarajan failed to do so. Following this, he was arrested and remanded.
