Electric scooter catches fire: Pay Rs 1.25 lakh for damages, Chennai consumer court directs scooter maker, seller

CHENNAI: The Chennai North District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed an electric scooter manufacturer and product seller to pay a compensation of Rs 1.25 lakh to a complainant whose electric vehicle was damaged in a fire accident.

The complainant BK Shankari purchased Okinawa praise pro electric bike in June 2022 for Rs 1.08 lakh from Anmol electric bikes, Perambur.

The vehicle was manufactured by Okinawa scooters and the complainant claims that she was using the vehicle for two years. Shankari claimed that in July 2024 around 3.45 am, the electric bike battery caught fire, causing significant damage to the vehicle and her father’s vehicle parked beside the said vehicle and other properties in the house.

She said the electric bike fitted with a battery with three years warranty and charger has an auto cut-off facility. She approached the seller and informed them about the incident. She also filed a police complaint based on which an FIR was also registered.

Shankari claimed that despite the complaint and bringing to the notice of the opposite parties, they failed to resolve the issue. So, there is clear deficiency in service on the part of both opposite parties, she stated.

The consumer commission headed by president D Gopinath and member Kavitha Kannan allowed the complaint against both the opposite parties for deficiency in service as a product manufacturer and product seller cum service provider.

Both opposite parties together were directed to Rs 1.25 lakh towards compensation for deficiency in service, pecuniary and non-pecuniary damages including litigation costs within two months from the date of receipt of this order.
