CHENNAI: A 70-year-old woman was killed after being knocked down by a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus while attempting to cross the road near Choolai Roundabout on Thursday (September 3) evening.

The deceased was identified as Savithri (70), who lived on the roadside at Kannappar Thidal in Periamet and sold fruits along the roadside on Demellows Road.

According to the police, Savithri was crossing the road near the roundabout when she was hit by an MTC bus (Route No. 242B) travelling from Puthagaram towards the Secretariat. She suffered severe injuries and died on the spot.

The motorists who witnessed the accident alerted the traffic police, and personnel from the Kilpauk Traffic Investigation Wing rushed to the spot, recovered Savithri's body and sent it to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The traffic police subsequently registered a case and arrested the bus driver, Sekar (42), a native of Tiruvallur. He is being questioned in connection with the accident.
