Elderly woman killed after being hit by MTC bus near Choolai; driver arrested

CHENNAI: A 70-year-old woman was killed after being knocked down by a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus while attempting to cross the road near Choolai Roundabout on Thursday evening.

The deceased was identified as Savithri (70), who lived on the roadside at Kannappar Thidal in Periamet and sold fruits along the roadside on Demellows Road.

According to police, Savithri was crossing the road near the Roundabout when she was hit by an MTC bus (Route No. 242B) travelling from Puthagaram towards the Secretariat. She suffered severe injuries and died on the spot.

Motorists who witnessed the accident alerted the traffic police. Personnel from the Kilpauk Traffic Investigation Wing rushed to the spot, recovered Savithri’s body and sent it to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for postmortem.

The traffic police subsequently registered a case and arrested the bus driver, Sekar (42), a native of Tiruvallur district. He is being questioned in connection with the accident.
