The accused were identified as Naveen (19) and Sarathkumar (20) of Washermenpet and the incident happened when Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was returning from the Secretariat on Wednesday evening.

While the traffic on the roads leading to Kamarajar Salai to make way for the CM’s convoy, a bike-borne duo managed to enter Kamarajar Salai near Ice House and breached the convoy and had a close shave with one of the police vehicles.

Immediately, the police control room was alerted and the two-wheeler speeding towards the war memorial was intercepted near Nappier Bridge. Though the duo tried to outwit police near Labour statue, police overpowered them after the bike hit the vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

Investigation revealed that Naveen works as a telephone operator at a private hospital in Mylapore while Sarathkumar is a waiter at a restaurant on ECR. “Addicted to ganja, the two smoked up in the Ice House area and were not in their sense when they breached the CM’s convoy,” said an officer. The duo was booked under Sections 188 and 269 of IPC and released on bail.
