Duo kills self over family’s opposition to their affair

On Tuesday morning, villagers at Salavattam noticed 2 dead bodies hanging from a tree in Maduranthagam and informed the police.

CHENNAI: A couple from Madurai was found hanging in a tree in Maduranthagam on Tuesday. Police said they had been allegedly having an affair.

Police said the deceased — Arul Jothi (22) of Thirumangalam village and Muthulakshmi (35) of Chennampatti in Madurai — were sister-in-law and brother-in-law and had been having an affair for months. They had been missing from September 4.

On Tuesday morning, villagers at Salavattam noticed 2 dead bodies hanging from a tree in Maduranthagam and informed the police. The Maduranthagam police sent the bodies for post-mortem.

During inquiry, they found that both were from Madurai and had been having an affair for many months. A few weeks ago, the family who came to know about it and wanted them to stop.

On Sunday, both went missing and died by suicide after reaching Maduranthagam. The police have registered a case under Section 174 and further investigation is on.
