DT Next Constituency Watch | Maduravoyal Realty boom meets deadly roads, sullied waters in politically hot seat

One of the defining features of Maduravoyal is its connectivity

CHENNAI: Poor road conditions and a surge in fatal accidents have emerged as major concerns in the Maduravoyal constituency, with residents flagging inadequate maintenance and civic neglect, raising concerns that their lives are at risk.

Located in the western corridor of Chennai, Maduravoyal has emerged as one of the most strategically significant Assembly segments in Tamil Nadu's urban political landscape. Rapid urbanisation, infrastructure expansion, and population growth have transformed the peripheral suburb into a politically dynamic constituency that reflects the aspirations and challenges of a fast-growing metro city.

The constituency comprises areas such as Maduravoyal, Nolambur, Vanagaram, Alapakkam, and parts of Porur, all of which have witnessed substantial real estate development over the past decade. With the expansion of Chennai's IT and industrial sectors, a large share of the population here comprises middle-class families, IT professionals, and migrant workers, making the voter base diverse in both socio-economic and cultural terms.

One of the defining features of Maduravoyal is its connectivity. The Chennai Bypass Road and its proximity to major arterial routes, such as the Poonamallee High Road, have made it a crucial transit hub. The long-pending Maduravoyal Chennai Port Elevated Corridor project has been a key electoral issue, frequently highlighted by political parties during campaigns. Residents view the project as a potential solution to the region's perennial traffic congestion.

However, civic infrastructure remains a major concern. While gated communities and new apartment complexes showcase modern amenities, several interior areas continue to struggle with poor drainage and, most critically, poorly maintained roads. Flooding during the monsoon season further worsens road conditions, exposing gaps in urban planning and stormwater management.

Residents say deteriorating road infrastructure has directly contributed to a rise in accidents. Kumar, an auto driver in the locality, told DT Next that the roads across Maduravoyal are in poor condition. He cited multiple fatal accidents linked to potholes and unsafe road conditions. In 2022, a 22-year-old woman died after her two-wheeler skidded on a stretch of road, causing her to fall and be run over by a tipper lorry. In another incident in 2024, a law student was killed on the spot on Poonamallee High Road after a speeding container truck rammed into his bike. Kumar added that several such accidents continue to occur due to neglected road maintenance.

Another resident from Nolambur said, "I have not even seen the MLA since the 2021 election. Everything may look fine on paper, but the ground reality is different." He too pointed to poor road conditions as a persistent issue in the constituency.

Mani Maran, a resident near Porur Lake, said the water body is an important source for Chennai, but alleged that sewage tankers sometimes discharge waste into it, raising concerns about public health.

Politically, Maduravoyal has been a battleground between the DMK and AIADMK. In 2016, AIADMK's P Benjamin won the seat, while in 2021, DMK's K Ganapathy secured victory. AIADMK is now keen on reclaiming the constituency, while DMK is working to retain it. Electoral outcomes here often reflect broader urban voting trends in Chennai, where governance, infrastructure, and cost of living play decisive roles.
