A day after a DMK man was hacked to death in full public view at the Broadway bus stand, five suspects, including an AIADMK functionary, surrendered before a magistrate at Chengalpattu court on Monday.

CHENNAI: They were identified as S Ganesh, his son Dineshkumar, A Enbam, ‘Fruiti’ alias Karthik Ganapathy and A Kumaresan from Vyasarpadi. The deceased, J Soundararajan of Washermenpet, had been running a juice shop in the bus stand for about two decades.

Police said Ganesh is an AIADMK functionary, who had an enmity with Soundararajan since he switched allegiance to DMK from AIADMK after assembly polls.

Recently, a fight broke out between them after Soudnararajan set up a water stall for the public inside the bus stand at a spot that had been chosen by AIADMK men. Esplanade police had intervened and let them off after getting the written statement not to confront each other again on the matter.

The enmity started earlier when Soundararajan occupied a wall at the bus stand for poll graffiti which had been traditionally used by AIADMK.

On Sunday morning, a bike-borne gang surrounded Soundararajan inside the bus stand and hacked him to death. Elephant Gate police have detained about 10 suspects.
