CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin launched a series of development works at the Virugambakkam canal for approximately Rs 30 crore on Monday.

The initiative is a pre-emptive measure ahead of the impending Northeast Monsoon season. The key projects launched include dredging and desilting of the canal, raising existing retaining walls, and installation of chain-link fencing.

These works are expected to enhance the canal's capacity, prevent overflow, and ensure public safety during heavy rainfall.

The inauguration event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Minister for Municipal Administration KN Nehru, and MLAs MK Mohan and AMV Prabhakaraja. Metro Water Board MD TG Vinay and Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran were also present at the event.
