CHENNAI: As people returned to Chennai after the Deepavali holidays, traffic was heavily affected at the Vikravandi toll booth on Sunday.
According to a Thanthi TV report, 62,276 vehicles crossed the toll plaza in the last 30 hours. Of these, 44,482 vehicles have passed specifically towards Chennai. The congestion was cleared in a few hours, and vehicular movement returned to normalcy.
Office-goers faced significant inconvenience due to long queues of city buses and cars. Vehicles were lined up for approximately 3 km from Kilambakkam to Urapakkam. There was also heavy congestion at the Paranur toll plaza in Chengalpattu, the report added.
There was overcrowding at railway stations, too, particularly in Tambaram station, as thousands returned from their native places after the holidays. In response, special trains were announced from Tambaram to accommodate the surge in passengers.
Meanwhile, bumper-to-bumper traffic was reported on GST Road near Tambaram, the gateway to southern Tamil Nadu.
