Cyber cops restitute Rs 2.12 cr to victims in January

CHENNAI: The city police's cyber crime has restituted Rs 2.12 crore to victims of cyber fraud in the first month of this year. In 2025, Greater Chennai Police's (GCP) cyber crime wing recovered Rs 25.97 crore lost to cyber fraudsters.

According to the police, the cybercrime division received 162 complaints in January through the emergency helpline number 1930 and direct walk-ins, and action was taken in 94 complaints.

Officers acted under the supervision of Zonal Joint Commissioners and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) to track fraudulent transactions, freeze suspects' bank accounts, and retrieve stolen funds through legal procedures

In January, the cyber crime wing team at the city police headquarters restituted Rs 84.81 lakh in 42 cases, followed by the South zone cyber crime unit, which recovered Rs 55.9 lakh in 14 cases.

West Zone Cyber Crime Unit recovered Rs 29.07 lakh in 12 cases, East Zone Cyber Crime Unit recovered Rs 24.07 lakh in 11 cases, and North Zone Cyber Crime Unit recovered Rs 17.97 lakh in 15 cases.
