Customs thwart separate gold, foreign currency smuggling attempts at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Air Customs officials have foiled two separate smuggling attempts at the city airport.

They seized 940 grams of gold and foreign currency valued at Rs 2.73 crore.

Four people were arrested. In the first case, Customs officers intercepted a flyer arriving from Dubai on an Air India flight on Tuesday.

During the examination, the officers found three balls of gold paste concealed inside his rectum.

A total of 940 grams of 24K gold, valued at about Rs 1.37 crore, was seized, and he was arrested. A swift follow-up led to the arrest of two people who came to collect the gold.

In the second case, during the pre-embarkation security check, CISF personnel detected suspicious images in the hand baggage of a woman passenger bound for Dubai on Monday.

She was handed over to Customs for detailed examination. Officials recovered US Dollar and Euro notes valued at Rs 2.73 crore from her baggage. She was arrested.
