Customs seize gold worth Rs 60L at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 60 lakh at the Chennai airport and arrested two passengers on Sunday.

Based on intelligence, a passenger from Chennai who arrived from Dubai was intercepted by AIU officers at the arrival hall. On personal examination, three bundles containing gold in paste form were recovered from the rectum. On extraction, gold of 24K purity totally weighing 690 grams valued at Rs. 30.31 lakh was recovered and seized under Customs Act, 1962.

In another case, another passenger from Sivagangai who arrived from Abu Dhabi was intercepted based on intelligence. During personal examination, three bundles containing gold in paste form were found concealed in his rectum. On extraction, one gold ingot weighing 685 grams of 24K purity valued at Rs 30.09 lakh was recovered and the same was seized under Customs Act,1962. Both the passengers were arrested and further inquiry is on.
