Crane catches fire at Chennai Metro Rail construction site, firefighters extinguish blaze

Firefighters from Medavakkam arrived swiftly and battled the fire for over an hour before bringing it under control.

CHENNAI: A crane engaged in Metro Rail works caught fire around midnight on Sunday in Kovilambakkam.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has been carrying out works along Medavakkam - St Thomas Mount Road. The crane that was being used at the Metro Rail construction site near Kovilambakkam caught fire after its battery exploded.

The workers at the site tried to douse the fire, but as it grew out of control, they alerted fire and rescue service. A team from Medavakkam Fire and Rescue reached the spot, and after a tough fight, the fire was extinguished after an hour.

The police said the traffic around the area was not impacted as the fire happened at midnight; nevertheless, the road was blocked for nearly an hour. No casualties were reported. The Medavakkam police have registered a case and are inquiring further.
