The bridges that are to be strengthened are Vaidyanathan bridge in Tondiarpet, Parthasarathy bridge at Vijayaraghavalu Road, and Captain Cotton canal bridge in MKB Nagar. “The three bridges are around 50 years old. The maximum life for the pillar of a bridge is 50 years, and the rods would have already been rusted. In few years, the bridges will be weak. So we are renovating it to avoid difficulties in the future,” said S Rajendiren, Chief Engineer (bridges, mechanical and buildings), Greater Chennai Corporation.
To avoid traffic diversion, they would start the work by changing the rods and bridge coating will be done, he said. “Traffic diversion will be done only when we start the bridge expansion work,” the official said.
The three projects are to be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 14 crore – Rs 4.76 crore for Vaidyanathan bridge, Rs 8.02 crore for Parthasarathy bridge, and Rs 1.78 crore for Captain Cotton canal bridge.
“The project was initiated two years ago, but the work delayed was due to the process of relocating cables and towers by the Tangedco. The zonal official will be in charge of the maintenance of the bridge after completing the renovation work,” said a senior official from Tondiarpet zonal office.
