CMRL records over 90 lakh ridership in May

The press note detailed that in May, only 1,863 passengers used travel cards as it had been suspended.

CHENNAI: Witnessing a significant surge over the previous year, the Chennai Metro Rail recorded a ridership of 90.14 lakh in May.

According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) data, ridership in May exceeded 90.14 lakh passengers. And, the highest single-day ridership was recorded on May 18 of over 3.54 lakh passengers.

However, the ridership in May 2025 was recorded to be 89.09 lakh passengers, and the highest single-day ridership for the month was 3.23 lakh passengers.

Further, the press note detailed that in May, only 1,863 passengers used travel cards as it had been suspended.

However, 42.51 lakh passengers used National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), 1.34 lakh passengers used online QR, 2 lakh passengers used static QR, 19.76 lakh passengers used paper QR, and 2.84 lakh passengers used Paytm.

Additionally, 4.20 lakh passengers have used the WhatsApp ticketing service, and 2.51 lakh passengers have used PhonePe.

On IPL match days, 31,444 passengers used event QR tickets, and during the Ilaiyaraaja music concert held recently, 18,468 passengers used event QR tickets.
