The permitted speed limit on the flyover will be 30 kmph.

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday inaugurated the much-awaited L-shaped Madhya Kailash flyover connecting Rajiv Gandhi Salai, also known as OMR, and Sardar Patel Road in Adyar, providing a clear relief from the traffic-jam-prone zone.

Built at a cost of Rs 60.68 crore by the Highways and Minor Ports Department, the project aims to ease chronic congestion at the T-junction, a major bottleneck during peak hours due to heavy commuter traffic to offices, schools and colleges in the area.

The two-lane, unidirectional flyover has been designed to carry vehicles moving from Sardar Patel Road towards OMR, enabling smoother flow from Guindy to OMR while allowing uninterrupted movement for vehicles travelling from Adyar towards Guindy at the junction below. With the opening of the flyover, traffic signals at the Madhya Kailash junction will be withdrawn, and free left turns will be facilitated for vehicles moving towards Guindy and Kotturpuram from Adyar and OMR.

A senior police officer said traffic signals will be operated to allow pedestrians to cross the junction safely. "We will monitor the traffic flow and situation for a week, after which we will decide on further regulation," the officer said.

The structure, including approach roads, has a total length of 652 metres. The curved ramp branching from Sardar Patel Road to OMR has a radius of 45 metres. To improve safety on the curve, the carriageway width has been increased, the parapet wall height enhanced, and super elevation provided. The design restricts vehicle speed on the flyover to 30 kmph, with warning signage installed. Lane markings have been provided to ensure orderly movement, and street lighting has been installed for nighttime safety.

The project is expected to reduce travel time and ease congestion across Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Guindy, and Adyar, including the area abutting Madhya Kailash, benefiting daily commuters and public transport users in one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Highways and Minor Ports Minister EV Velu, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister MRK Panneerselvam, Health Minister Ma Subramanian, MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian, MLAs and senior officials were present at the inauguration.
