Close monitoring essential to differentiate seasonal flu, pandemic

As the monsoon season rolls into the city, the damp weather it is bringing is creating the ripe environment for seasonal flu and other sicknesses. This can cause a lot of distress amid the pandemic, as both have similar symptoms. Careful monitoring of health and immunisation are the key to stay on top, say healthcare professionals.

With most seasonal flus having symptoms similar to COVID-19 – like fevers, colds and coughs – people should immediately practise physical distancing, doctors recommend.

“It’s difficult even for us to differentiate between the two without a test. Ensure that you consult a doctor the same day that the symptoms arise, and follow their instructions. If symptoms persist, doctors will prescribe a test for both COVID-19 and the flu to rule out all possibilities,” said a pulmonary expert from a local public health hospital. The precautionary measures for both seasonal flus and the pandemic are the same – wearing mask, washing hands and maintaining social distancing. Doctors recommend that patients practise the same for a week after treatment to ensure the safety of their family members.

Children are relatively safer this year, as the reduced physical contact due to school closure mean that they are at a lesser risk. However, doctors recommend that children are told to practise caution if they come into contact with those outside the parents.

“I’d ask parents not to worry, because children usually have strong immune systems. Ensuring that children receive their immunisation shots for the flu will help. Additionally, hand washing is important practise, especially when children come back home from playing with their friends. Apart from that, following a healthy diet and getting proper sleep will also help with general immunity,” said Dr Suresh Natarajan, senior consultant - general paediatrics, paediatric pulmonology and allergy specialist, Rainbow Children’s Hospital.
