According to a tweet from Chennai Smart City Ltd, the textile zone of North Chennai would soon have a pedestrian plaza. “For the ease of shopping and walking, MC Road is set to be revamped with pedestrian plaza. More pedestrian plazas in Chennai soon,” the tweet said.

Once completed, the MC Road one would be the third pedestrian plaza in the city after T Nagar pedestrian plaza and the upcoming one in Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Nungambakkam.

The pedestrian plazas in the city have been mooted under the non-motorised transport policy. The projects will be implemented under the Mega Street Project, which is a part of the Smart City mission project.

The Chennai Corporation launched the ‘Mega Street’ project and decided to redevelop the roads and streets in selected areas. During the first phase of the project, Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Mylapore, Velachery, Adyar, Tondiarpet, George Town and Thiruvottiyur have been segregated into six packages with a plan to create one pedestrian plaza in each. Apart from pedestrian-friendly facilities, the Mega Street project aims to create greenways alongside water bodies.
