CHENNAI: Final-stage work on the Madhya Kailash flyover is progressing rapidly, with officials planning to open it for public use in the first week of February.
The 650-metre-long, L-shaped flyover, linking Sardar Patel Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), is nearing completion, with installation of the final 35-metre deck slab currently underway. Traffic from Adyar to Guindy is being allowed straight along Sardar Patel Road to facilitate the works, said a Maalaimalar report.
The junction sees nearly 11,000 vehicles per hour, making it one of Chennai’s most congested intersections. The flyover is expected to ease traffic around IIT and the Adyar Cancer Institute, though congestion may rise briefly at Tidel Park junction.
Following the opening, traffic diversions and road widening works on Sardar Patel Road will be introduced in phases. The widening project, estimated at Rs 45 crore, includes additional lanes, improved footpaths and noise barriers near the Cancer Institute.
