CHENNAI: The principal sessions court in the city extended the Directorate of Enforcement’s (ED) custody of alleged drug kingpin Jaffer Sadiq by four more days in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case, rejecting the plea for a 12-day extension.
ED pleaded with the principal sessions judge S Alli for 12 more days of custody as the agency claimed interrogation was not over. But the judge turned down the plea, restricted the extension to four more days and directed the agency to produce him on July 23 before the court.
On June 26, the ED sleuths from Chennai zone arrested Jaffer Sadiq in the Tihar Central Prison, New Delhi, where he was lodged after being arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for peddling pseudoephedrine to Australia and New Zealand.
The ED registered the case under the PMLA Act in connection with the drug smuggling case.
The court issued a prisoner transit warrant.
On July 16, the sessions court allowed the ED to take Jaffer Sadiq under custody until July 19, since the investigation agency submitted that the interrogation was not completed and sought more time.
