CHENNAI: The Special Court for Anti-Corruption Cases in Chennai sentenced a Revenue Department official to four years of rigorous imprisonment for demanding a bribe to issue a legal heir certificate.
In 2014, S Krishnaveni, a resident of Old Washermenpet, had applied for a legal heir certificate at the Tondiarpet Taluk office. During the process, Revenue Inspector T Hariharan demanded Rs 30,000 to issue the certificate.
Refusing to pay the bribe, Krishnaveni lodged a complaint with the Vigilance. After a trap was set, Hariharan was arrested while accepting the bribe.
Special Judge V Jagannathan held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond doubt and awarded Hariharan four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 4,000.
