CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to take up ‘Complete Streets’ redevelopment on two more city roads — Pulla Avenue in Shenoy Nagar and Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue in Adyar — and has invited bids to appoint a Project Management Consultant to supervise the works.

The redevelopment package up for bids also includes Racecourse Link Road. The three roads together cover 3.6 km, with 1.6 km on Pulla Avenue, 1.2 km on Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue, and 0.8 km on Racecourse Link Road.

A highly commercial stretch, Pulla Avenue is about to be fully revamped, covering the entire circular road and the two arms connecting EVR Periyar Salai and Kilpauk Garden Road.

Similar redesigns are already under way in the city. Work to turn Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Nungambakkam into a pedestrian plaza is nearing completion, while redevelopment works on Monegar Choultry Road have been progressing in phases over the past three years.

Speaking to DT Next, an assistant engineer from the GCC's Special Projects Department said, “as per the proposed design, the three words will have bituminous road instead of cobblestone."

The project, implemented under the World Bank-funded Chennai City Partnership Project, through the Sustainable Urban Services Programme, is intended to improve walkability and safety, with continuous and obstruction-free footpaths, reorganised carriageways, stormwater drains, revamped underground utility ducts, street lighting, signage and street furniture.
