CHENNAI: A minor fire broke out in a building that houses the office of the Chennai Police Commissioner in Vepery on Friday morning, damaging computer equipment belonging to the Central Crime Branch (CCB).

The CCB's Forgery and Document Fraud Prevention Unit is located on the second floor of the Commissionerate. The office space includes cabins for an assistant commissioner, a police writer, four inspectors, and three sub-inspectors.

Around 7 am, an officer on patrol noticed smoke and fire in the office and alerted the fire control room while duty officers tried to douse the flames.

Subsequently, fire tenders from Vepery fire station arrived and extinguished the blaze in half an hour.

There have been no injuries as the incident occurred early in the morning and no police personnel were present inside.

Officials confirmed that the fire, reportedly triggered by an electrical fault, destroyed one computer, a CPU unit, and an office chair. A senior officer stated that no documents were lost.

An electrical issue had been reported the previous week, and electricity board staff were already working on it.

Further investigation is on.
