CHENNAI: A doctor employed at a prominent private medical college in Chromepet has been arrested by the Tambaram All Women Police Station for allegedly deceiving and physically assaulting a first-year MS postgraduate student from Chhattisgarh after promising to marry her.

The accused, identified as Dr Ramki (36), a resident of Nedungunram near Tambaram, was working at the well-known private medical college. According to police, he developed a relationship with the student, who was studying at the same institution. He is alleged to have romantically pursued her with the promise of marriage.

The situation escalated when the student discovered that Dr Ramki was already married and had a child. Confronted about this, he reportedly told the student that he would divorce his wife and then marry her. However, he continually delayed taking any concrete steps.

Police sources state that as the student persistently insisted on marriage, Dr Ramki refused and began to harass and threaten her. He allegedly claimed to have political influence and dared her to complain to anyone, asserting that she could not harm him.

The matter came to a head today near the hospital premises. An argument between the two on the roadside turned violent, with Dr Ramki allegedly brutally assaulting the student in full public view. Alerted by bystanders, local police intervened.

Following the incident, the victim filed a formal complaint at the Tambaram All Women Police Station. Acting on her complaint, the police have registered a case and arrested Dr Ramki.
