Chennai: Gender lab’s new initiative to enable women’s safety in public spaces

CHENNAI: During a roundtable discussion held by the GCC’s Gender and Policy Lab, the focus was on detailing the concept of a safe Chennai that includes public transport, streets, digital spaces, community engagement, complaints and support services for easy ways to file complaints for women’s safety.

Titled ‘Safe and Women-Friendly Chennai’, police officers and civil service society members participated in the discussion held at Koyambedu on Wednesday.

Some of the highlighted points were information dissemination camps, helplines and support from voluntary organisations, community cooperation, bystander intervention to enable safe reporting of incidents, strengthening police-community cooperation, safety surveys on public roads and transport spaces, technological facilities, and creating women-friendly spaces by engaging community leaders and voluntary organisations.

The GCC has been undertaking a series of initiatives to create an environment in which all genders, including women and girls, can live in the city with confidence, respect and safety within the Corporation limits. The event was attended by officials from TN Women’s Development Corporation, Chennai police, members of Child Welfare and Special Services Department and Gender and Policy Lab and volunteers.
