Chennai: Councillor flags mosquito menace, seeks GCC action

CHENNAI: Residents across Chennai have reported a rise in mosquito menace in recent weeks, prompting conceOtteri be raised in the Greater Chennai Corporation council meeting.

During the question hour, Ward 104 councillor TV Semmozhi sought details of the civic body’s proactive measures to control mosquitoes across all zones.

He said stagnant sewage in stormwater drains had turned into major breeding grounds and urged the Corporation to address growing public anxiety.

“In my ward, several streets have witnessed sewage stagnation of up to two feet inside stormwater drains. Immediate steps must be taken to drain water from all stormwater drains across the city,” he said.

Responding to the issue, Mayor R Priya said the Corporation was taking active steps to tackle the mosquito problem.

“Around 3,592 malaria control workers have been engaged in door-to-door inspections, spraying and fogging operations across city roads,” she added. “Drone-based spraying machines are being deployed to curb mosquito breeding along 251 km of waterways, including the Otteri Nullah, Buckingham Canal and Mambalam Canal, among others.”
