Temporary flagpoles will only be allowed for a maximum of three days, while religious events may be permitted for up to seven days.

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has fixed a rental charge of Rs 10 per flagpole per event and constituted 15 zonal-level sub-committees to process and approve applications to erect temporary flagpoles across the city.

The applications for installation of temporary flagpoles for meetings, election campaigns, conferences, processions, dharnas and festivals must be submitted online through the GCC website at least seven days in advance.

The applications will be scrutinised by the zonal-level committees headed by the respective zonal assistant commissioners, with officials from the Revenue Department, police, public works, highways, CMWSSB, Tangedco and the Corporation as members. Approvals will be communicated to applicants through SMS.

Temporary flagpoles will only be allowed for a maximum of three days, while religious events may be permitted for up to seven days. The civic body reiterated that flagpoles cannot be erected on tar roads, medians, footpaths, drains, bridges or other road structures and must be installed only on soil surfaces at least three metres away from the road edge, with proper insulation to avoid electrical hazards.

The GCC said organisers would be fully responsible for any accidents, injuries or damage to public infrastructure, and would be required to restore public spaces to their original condition at their own cost.
