CHENNAI: A policeman attached to Chennai police has been allegedly murdered by his brother-in-law in a staged accident.

Kamesh Kumar, attached to the Neelankarai police station, was allegedly killed by his sister’s husband after the latter ran an SUV over him in Cheyyur on Tuesday.

Police sources said Kamesh had an ongoing tussle with his sister's husband Madan Prabhu for the past few months over some properties.

On Tuesday, around 11.30 am, when Kamesh was travelling on his bike from his farmland, he stopped near the salt colony to attend a phone call. Police said during that time Madan Prabhu who came in his car with his friends ran over Kamesh killing him on the spot.

Police said the gang tried to escape in the car, but it caught fire due to an electrical short circuit. However, they jumped from the vehicle and ran from the spot.

The Cheyyur police who visited the spot retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem examination to the Maduranthagam GH and the fire and rescue team doused the fire. The police have registered a case and a search is on to nab Madan and his friends, who are missing.
