CHENNAI: In an incident that created a flutter in the teaching community, teachers at a government school in Vyasarpadi found a class 11 student in possession of ganja during an inspection on Monday and informed the police.
While no case has been registered yet, the city police are investigating the source of the narcotic substance. Police sources said that about five grams of ganja was recovered from the teenager. The boy told the police personnel that he found the ganja packet on the road and brought it to show his friends. However, police are questioning the boy to find out if he consumes drugs.
"We often get inputs that consumption of oral tobacco products like cool lip is prevalent among school students, and have taken measures to cut off the supply and sales near educational institutions. Strict action will be taken against peddlers who target and supply narcotic substances to school students," a senior police officer said.
The incident attracted censure from opposition parties, with Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, condemning the DMK government for failure to curb drug distribution.
