CHENNAI: Regular commuters at the Gandhi Nagar bus stop on New Avadi Road are urging the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to repair the damaged roof of a poorly maintained bus shelter.
According to a frequent traveller, the Gandhi Nagar bus stop features two shelters, one of which has a roof in a severe state of disrepair. This damage forces passengers, including students, working professionals, and senior citizens, to wait in the direct sun for upwards of 15 minutes while waiting for their buses.
S Valli, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in the ICF colony, noted that the roof has been in this condition for at least two weeks. "Restoring the roof would provide much-needed relief to the commuters who rely on this stop daily," she said.
A local shop owner, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "During peak morning and evening hours, large crowds gather here. We see the local body updating the advertisements on the shelter boards, yet they haven't replaced the damaged roof. It's a safety hazard that could fall at any time. We urge officials to take swift action."
The civic body data says, GCC maintains 779 bus shelters built under various schemes and 637 bus shelters under the Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. Also, it maintains 128 traffic islands and 173 medians.
In response to these concerns, a Greater Chennai Corporation official stated, "I will inform the relevant officials to ensure the roof of the bus shelter is repaired promptly."
